SALEM – A Lynn man who admitted beating and strangling his girlfriend until she lost consciousness during an argument last winter will serve four years in state prison and then be on probation for another three years. In Salem Superior Court Monday morning, William Tyrone Hall, 32, a car detailer who formerly resided at 145 Lewis St., pleaded guilty to attempted murder, two counts of assault and battery causing serious bodily injury and destruction of property over $250, before Judge John T. Lu.The judge sentenced Hall in agreement with Assistant District Attorney Kate B. MacDougall and defense lawyer Randi Potash.Swampscott Police received an emergency 911 call just before 1 a.m. on Jan 15.Officers Thomas Lucas, Todd Pierce and Thomas Hennessey arrived at 15B Currier Court, where they found the 35-year-old female victim. The victim had great difficulty speaking to police because of her injuries but told them she had been beaten by her boyfriend, William Hall. Police said she had a split lip and tongue. The woman said she had come home that night before midnight, showered, and when she came out wrapped in a towel, Hall was in her apartment. They argued over money he apparently had given her and then began beating her on the bed while repeatedly saying, I’m going to kill you (expletive).”She was beaten so severely she lost consciousness at one point, MacDougall said.A neighbor hearing her cries ran up and found Hall standing over the victim, who was in a “heap,” according to MacDougall.Hall left the apartment, but not before punching holes in the wall.He was picked up a couple of days later by police on a warrant. The couple had only been dating for two weeks.MacDougall based the punishment on the nature and violence inflicted, while pointing out that Hall has a history of prior violence including strangulation. She told Lu that the victim has been a “reluctant participant” from the beginning of the case and one thing the victim repeatedly kept saying was “I don’t know why he did this to me,” MacDougall said.Potash said that she felt the sentence was “fair.”While on probation Hall will participate in a batterers program and consent to drug testing. The judge credited him the 195 days he has spent in jail awaiting trial on the case.
