SALEM – A Salem man who got caught peddling cocaine to an undercover officer is headed to jail for the next two and a half years followed by probation.Luis Tolentino, 37, who last lived at 332 Lafayette St. in Salem, made his plea Friday morning in Salem Superior Court in a deal worked out between Assistant District Attorney Michael P. Hickey and defense lawyer Stephen D. Judge.Tolentino pleaded guilty to two counts of possession with the intent to distribute cocaine before Judge John T. Lu.Lu found Tolentino guilty as charged and agreed to adopt the sentence proposed by the attorneys.Tolentino was sentenced to serve two and a half years in the House of Corrections to be followed by another two years of probation at which time he will be evaluated for substance abuse treatment and counseling as recommended by his probation officer. He also will lose his driving privileges in Massachusetts for the next five years because of the drug convictions.Tolentino’s confession spared him of a mandatory five years in prison on each of the two drug charges. He initially was charged with subsequent offenses because of a conviction for cocaine distribution out of Salem District Court in 2008.Hickey told Lu that the charges arise out of two hand-to-hand drug sales to an undercover officer in Lynn last summer. On June 18 Tolentino sold several twists of cocaine to the officer for $100 on Ocean Street. Then, on July 22, he sold three twists of cocaine to the undercover officer on Newhall Avenue for approximately $100.Both drug sales happened within yards of a school, but as part of the plea concession worked out the commonwealth agreed not to prosecute.Tolentino was indicted by an Essex County grand jury in January and has been held in lieu of bail since his arraignment.
