SALEM – A New Hampshire woman who was caught in a vehicle at the Square One Mall parking lot in Saugus with an ounce of cocaine received a year in jail.Brandy Ross, 29, who last lived at 70 Winter St., #1B, in Somersworth, pleaded guilty to a significantly reduced charge of possession of cocaine in a deal worked out between the prosecutor and defense.Salem Superior Court Judge Timothy Q. Feeley agreed to adopt the recommendation offered by Assistant District Attorney Marsha H. Slingerland and defense lawyer David Grimaldi.Ross’ confession to the reduced charge spared her a mandatory five years in state prison. On the night of June 10, 2008, Saugus Police Officer Frank Morrello was on routine patrol when he observed a white Pontiac Grand Prix at the entrance to the shopping mall, which was closed at the time. He approached the vehicle and saw a spoon with white residue on it, but no one was inside the vehicle at the time. The following night, June 11, he spotted the same vehicle again and stopped it in the parking lot of Sears on Route 1 at the Square One Mall.Arthur L. Bougie was the driver and Ross was the female passenger inside the vehicle.Morrello said he observed the spoon inside the door pocket and also saw a tube with white powder residue on it.After further questioning, Bougie admitted to the officer that the syringe and needle was his and that the vehicle belonged to his estranged wife. The officer found 35.13 grams of cocaine inside the console in baggies and another 2.73 grams of cocaine was confiscated from the tube, police said.Bougie, 44, also of New Hanpshire, pleaded guilty earlier this year and is now serving five years in state prison. The judge credited Ross the 77 days she has spent in jail awaiting trial on the case. She will serve her punishment at Framingham State Prison for Women.
