SALEM – A Lynn man who allegedly slapped his girlfriend and beat her daughter with a baseball bat during a domestic dispute on Hanover Street in June remains held without bail at the Middleton Jail pending a dangerousness hearing.Gary Cowart, 54, of 38 Hanover St. #10, appeared Friday in Salem Superior Court for his arraignment, pleading innocent to assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury and assault and battery before Judge John T. Lu.Assistant District Attorney Karen Hopwood filed a petition for a dangerousness hearing, contending that Cowart poses a danger to the victims involved in the case and community at large.The judge set down Sept. 17 for the hearing at which time defense lawyer Christopher Norris will argue that there are conditions of release for his client that would ensure the safety of all.In the meantime, Cowart remains held without bail.The charges arise out of an incident in Lynn on June 11 when Cowart apparently slapped his girlfriend in the face and struck her 29-year-old daughter with a baseball bat during a domestic dispute at their apartment also on Hanover Street.Cowart is charged with striking the daughter in the face with a baseball bat, causing serious damage to her eye.A conviction on the assault and battery causing serious bodily injury charge carries up to 10 years in state prison and assault and battery carries up to 30 months in the House of Corrections.
