SALEM – A Lynn man who authorities say robbed a downtown bank twice during a week-long crime spree has been indicted by an Essex County grand jury.Douglas N. Wilson, 42, of 38-R South Elm St., is charged with two counts of unarmed robbery in connection with the July robberies. The charges concern two holdups at the Sovereign Bank branch, located at 35 Market Square in Lynn.At around 4:30 p.m. on July 8, a heavy set man, wearing glasses and a baseball cap walked into the bank, handed the female teller a bag and note which said, “It is a robbery. Don’t want anybody to get hurt,” while demanding she fill the bag. She turned over $272.50 and the robber fled from the scene. The teller was able press the silent alarm.A week later, on July 15, the would-be robber wearing a baseball cap walked into the same bank, handed over a similar note and fled with more than $300.Police reviewing the video cameras from the bank were able to link Wilson to both holdups. He also was apparently identified by the teller in the second holdup from a photo array shown to her by police.Wilson was arrested at his home without incident, but denied being involved in the two bank robberies.Assistant District Attorney Kristen R. Buxton is assigned to prosecute the case. Also indicted was Gregory Devenne, 42, of Medford, charged with intimidation of a witness and assault and battery in connection with an incident that occurred in Lynnfield last Dec. 27.Indictments are not an indication of guilt: rather it is a legal process that allows a case to be transferred from District Court to Superior Court, allowing for a more severe punishment.
