The final is Saturday at Manning Field at 2:45The Spartans won an exciting, evenly-matched game thanks a goal by Josh Stueve, with 12:45 left in the game that broke a 1-1 tie.Out of a scramble in front of the Classical net, the ball bounced out to Steuve, who was standing about 10 yards out. Stueve put the shot back through the screen and past startled keeper Dammy Dada, who did not see it coming. From there, the Spartans held on for the final 13 minutes.”This is a great victory for us,” said St. Mary’s coach Mike D’Agostino. “We’re a small Division 3 school, and we just beat a D1 team ? and Classical, too. That’s amazing, that we beat Classical. As far as I know, that’s never happened.”Both teams opened the game with a short passing controlled type of game. That tactic lasted about 15 minutes when the long bombs were flying down the wings to some incredibly quick forwards. This paid off for Classical in the 20th minute when Abdoulaye Bah carried the ball down the right wing and crossed it to Walter Cifuentes who beat Spartan keeper Michael Campbell to the low left side. The lead lasted about nine minutes. Julian Yourawski and Ralph Bertrand went in 2-on-1 from 30 yards out. Yourawski drew the last defender to him and fed Bertrand with a perfect through ball. Bertrand beat Rams Dada to the short side. For the first 30 minutes of the opener, both teams put on a clinic. Their passing, dribbling, shooting, along with perfect through balls by both teams were something you would see in mid-season. Both keepers, Jose Alas of Tech and Cody Faris of English made spectacular saves, many at point blank range. In the 33rd minute, Tech’s Rene Perez put a through ball down the right wing that sophomore Francisco picked up and veered to the goal and beat the keeper to the far low corner, giving Tech the 1-0 lead – the only goal of the first half.In a two minute period of the second half, Tech salted away the trip to the finals on Saturday. In the 67th minute, Gustavo Rodriguez blocked a clearing pass by an English defender about 40 yards from the goal and he was in alone on Faris. As he crossed into the area, he put a move on the Faris and beat him to the low right corner. Two minutes later, Francisco Franco carried the ball up the middle and drew the defenders to him and hit Klaus Alexis with a perfect square pass that he tucked into the short side. That made the score 3-0, and, for all intents and purposes, iced the win for the Tigers. With three minutes to go, English scored. Vladrim Xhemali drew Alas to the right side of the net and put the ball behind”(Tech) outplayed us,” English coach Kerry King said. “They hustled for every ball and won every 50-50 ball.”We played as a team,” Tech’s Fred Gallo said. “We made the passes that we should make. Our defense is not big, but it is tough.”English and Classical will play in the consolation game Saturday at 10:45 a.m. All funds raised in this tournament will be donated to the Special Olympics.
