NAHANT – A kite surfer battled rough waves in the waters of Short Beach Monday evening, but managed to safely get to shore without the assistance of fire officials.Around 6 p.m., an unidentified man operating a red and yellow kite was seen drifting away from shore by rough winds toward Egg Rock in Lynn.Police watched as the surfer struggled to regain momentum during the high-surf advisory and called in the Nahant Fire Department’s Ocean Rescue Team for assistance. The team responded to the area but ended up not being needed by the surfer, who managed to get back on track and headed back to Short Beach.Medical crews evaluated the surfer once he made it back to shore. A man in a kayak was said to have paddled out to the surfer to offer his help.Beachgoers along the North Shore experienced significantly higher waves Monday as effects from hurricane Igor took a turn toward the Northeast. Although the storm is hundreds of miles offshore, it’s expected to churn up dangerous rip currents along the Atlantic ocean.
