SALEM – A Lynn man slapped a probation officer across the face as he left Salem Superior Court on Friday.Judge John T. Lu ordered Karl Lamont Hackney of Lynn held on $100,000 after the incident.Hackney, 45, last known address of 65 North Common St., #21, Lynn, who is no stranger to the courts, had been held on a $25,000 cash bail following his innocent plea in July to charges of possession of heroin with the intent to distribute, possession of cocaine with the intent to distribute, carrying a firearm without a license, subsequent offense, and carrying a loaded firearm arising out of an incident in Lynn on June 3.His defense lawyer, Christopher Norris, was initially successful Friday in convincing Lu to lower the suspect’s bail to $10,000 cash.Hackney was also in court for a probation violation, which the judge agreed to place him on personal recognizance for pending a hearing in November. But Hackney was not satisfied with the reduction and said to Lu “If I had $10,000, I would not be indigent.”Fortunately for Hackney, Lu said he did not hear all of his statement, but warned Hackney if he had, he would have slapped him with a contempt charge. Then as Hackney was being escorted from the courtroom, he lunged toward probation officer Jeff January.Lu immediately ordered Hackney back into the courtroom and noted from the bench that now there were changed circumstances and he was considering holding Hackney on his new criminal case without bail.He told Hackney to apologize and as Hackney spouted, “I’m a man. I am standing up for my rights,” Chief Probation officer Martin Wallace quickly interceded and said, “I think he should be held without bail,” adding, “He’s going by and assaults a probation officer in the courtroom, your honor?”Norris quickly tried to explain to Lu that tensions were running high, as Lu explained he “didn’t see everything.””Your honor, he slapped me in the face,” January immediately stated while emphasizing Hackney’s actions to Lu.
