SALEM – The girlfriend of a Lynn cop who faces a road rage incident pleaded innocent Monday in Superior Court to witness intimidation.Catherine Foley, 33, of 271 Lynn Shore Drive, #1, Lynn, was released on personal recognizance with conditions she stay away and have no contact with a witness and the victim. Judge John T. Lu ordered her to turn in her passport within a week to the probation department, pending the outcome of her case.She allegedly tried to intimidate and threaten the victim, Richard Zelandi, 24, on Aug. 1 and Aug. 9 to change his account of the run-in with her boyfriend, Lynn police officer Geovanni Ruano.Ruano, 46, of 15 Osborne St., Lynn, a 13-year police veteran, pleaded innocent last week to assault and battery in connection with a road rage incident on July 31.According to police reports, Ruano, driving a 2003 Chevy Tahoe, followed Zelandi, driving a convertible BMW, down Nahant Street between 10:30 and 11 p.m., flashing his headlights.When Zelandi turned onto Atlantic Terrace, he stopped his BMW. Ruano also stopped his truck, got out and identified himself as a Lynn police officer.Zelandi asked to see Ruano’s badge and the two walked over to his Tahoe.While en route they reportedly continued to argue and when they reached the truck, Ruano allegedly threw the victim onto the hood of his Tahoe.Then after the victim began to walk back to his car, Ruano climbed into his truck, put it in drive and steered it into Zelandi at slow speed.In fear of his life, Zelandi grabbed hold of the truck’s hood while Ruano reportedly continued to drive, as the victim screamed for help.Ruano apparently slammed on the brakes and Zelandi bounced off another car, suffering neck and back injuries. Ruano then sped away from the scene, according to witness accounts.Ruano also denied a second charge of witness intimidation on Aug. 1 when he tried to convince Zelandi from reporting the account of the incident.Ruano also is free on his own personal recognizance and ordered to surrender his passport.His attorney, Thomas Drechsler, stated following Ruano’s arraignment, “He’s pleaded not guilty. He denies all the allegations. We are confident of his exoneration.”Both Ruano and Foley are due back in court on Nov. 2 for a pretrial conference.
