LYNN – A Lynn man who allegedly broke into a home on President Street Thursday ran through a glass door in an attempt to flee the scene and was later tackled by an off-duty officer on a nearby covered swimming pool.Alexander O. Barrios, 19, of 51 Laighton St., #2, was charged with unarmed burglary, wanton destruction of property over $250, trespassing, malicious destruction of property under $250 and two counts of assault and battery. He was arraigned Thursday at Lynn District Court by Judge Stacy Fortes White and was ordered held without bail due to an open case in Chelsea District Court. If Barrios clears that case up, he will be ordered to post $500 bail for the Lynn case. A probable cause hearing has been scheduled for Oct. 26.Around midnight Thursday, Lynn Police responded to a report of a breaking and entering and were told while on their way that an off-duty Beverly police officer was chasing after Barrios. As the officers arrived on scene, they caught up with the officer, who was said to have been bleeding profusely from a laceration to his left arm after getting into a scuffle with Barrios.Once Barrios was taken into custody, officers returned to the scene of the crime, where they found a large amount of shattered glass that stretched from the front door out onto the street. One of the victims, a 59-year-old woman, told police she was in bed when she heard a disturbance in her house and found her 36-year-old son in the living room, bleeding from his foot. Her son said he had been sleeping in his bedroom on the second floor of the house when he got out of bed to use the bathroom and felt someone grab his shoulder. When he turned around, he said a Hispanic man was standing in his room and kept apologizing and saying, “Sorry.”Disoriented from sleeping, the victim said he followed the suspect, Barrios, downstairs and asked what he was doing in his home. At that point, the two got into a fight and Barrios allegedly tried to leave out a back slider door, but couldn’t open the lock. The two fought again, but Barrios managed to break free and this time ran to the front door, where he got the inside door open, but ran straight through a glass storm door, shattering the glass all over the entry way of the house both inside and out.The victim said his neighbor, the off-duty officer, was walking his dog at the time and was steps from his house, witnessing the incident. The officer is said to have begun struggling with Barrios as he tried to detain him, but Barrios broke free and began running down the street. The officer then chased Barrios and tackled him to the ground, where he sustained a cut to his arm, but Barrios again managed to get away, this time hopping a neighbor’s fence and crushing a wooden wishing well planter with the weight of his body. The officer then caught up with Barrios and took him into custody on top of a covered swimming pool.
