LYNN – After allegedly assaulting his girlfriend in a drunken rage with a dagger Friday night, a Lynn man attempted to hide in the bushes from Lynn Police and was later hit with a baton when he wouldn’t cooperate.John Michael Devine, 24, of 6 Oak St., was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, dagger, domestic assault and battery and resisting arrest. He was arraigned Tuesday at Lynn District Court by Judge Michael Lauranzano, where he was ordered held in lieu of $5,000 cash bail. A pre-trial hearing has been scheduled for Oct. 20.Around 11:30 p.m., a Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) officer was flagged down by a woman on Neptune Boulevard, saying there was a man nearby armed with a knife. Lynn Police arrived on scene a few minutes later and spoke with the woman, who said she heard a man and a woman fighting on the third floor of her building.Police went to the apartment in question and found the front door open and a victim shouting, “He ran down the stairs,” while pointing toward a stairway that leads to a parking lot. She also said, “He has a knife and he placed it against my neck.”When police went outside, they found Devine hiding in the bushes next to the building as he was being confronted by both Lynn and MBTA transit police. Devine, who stands 6-feet, 6-inches tall, was described by police as “large” and was ordered to the ground by officers with their weapons drawn.Devine allegedly refused to cooperate with police and grabbed the fence with both hands. An officer then tried to pull him to the ground, but when he was unable to do so, another officer hit Devine twice in his right leg with a baton and once on his hand in an effort to make him let go of the fence.Police say Devine eventually gave in and was taken into custody. EMTs with Atlantic Ambulance later evaluated Devine and medically cleared him.The 25-year-old victim later told police that Devine started drinking vodka that afternoon and switched to a 40-ounce bottle of beer several hours later when they got into an argument. She said she got upset with him and threw the bottle of beer against a wall, smashing it. After that happened, she claims that Devine grabbed a dagger from the living room and placed it against her neck. She told police she was scared that he was going to kill her, so she called 911 for help as he darted out the front door.
