SALEM – A Lynn man, facing a mandatory 10 years in state prison after being caught peddling approximately 700 OxyContin pills during a drug bust this summer, was held on $75,000 cash bail following his arraignment.Adriano Almonte, 32, of 5 Newcastle St., Lynn, denied a charge of trafficking over 100 grams of OxyContin Wednesday in Salem Superior Court.Judge Timothy Q. Feeley set the high cash bail acknowledging Almonte’s illegal alien status from the Dominican Republic, facts of the case and lack of ties to the community and street value of the drugs.Assistant District Attorney James P. Gubitose had asked for $50,000 cash bail, saying it was reasonable to assure his presence in court. In July, Authorities received information from a confidential informant that Almonte was illegally selling large amounts of OxyContin purchased in New York and that the 80mg pills, worth $50,000 on the streets, were stored in his vehicle.Police set up surveillance and on the night of July 15 stopped the 2008 green Toyota Camry, registered to Almonte, on Boston Street. Almonte was driving and Rafael Gomez, his alleged co-defendant, was a passenger.Authorities, using a drug canine, located a compartment in the instrument panel which revealed 700 OxyContin tablets, just fewer than 200 grams. Almonte admitted the pills belonged to him and Gomez, 32, and that they were “working together.”Defense lawyer Raymond D. Buso quickly challenged the statement that Almonte allegedly made to police, saying he (Almonte) “absolutely” denies saying it, while maintaining Almonte was giving Gomez a ride and that the vehicle was a “family-owned car.”Buso acknowledged his client is not a citizen of the U.S. and has been here for seven years, but insisted he has been employed. Buso also questioned the reliability of the cooperating witness while asking for $25,000 cash bail, which the judge quickly denied, increasing the bail to $75,000.Almonte is due back in court on Nov. 16. Gomez, who pleaded innocent earlier, remains held at the Middleton Jail on $50,000 cash bail.
