SALEM – A Lynn man denied in court Wednesday that he fatally shot Vincent K. Gaskins outside Soriano’s nightclub on Market Street in 2009.Darkens Bonnett, 19, of 16 Osborne St., pleaded innocent in Salem Superior Court to charges of murder in the first degree and carrying a firearm without a license before Judge Timothy Q. Feeley.Bonnett seemed expressionless during his arraignment, while numerous Gaskins family members in the courtroom glared at him.Gaskins, 30, who lived at 159A Essex St. in Lynn, was fatally shot once in the head at about 1:20 a.m on Nov. 22, 2009 with a .22 caliber handgun outside 41 Market St., Lynn.When police arrived, they found Gaskins unresponsive. His girlfriend, Ashley Auger, 24, had tried to perform CPR on Gaskins. He was then transported to Salem Hospital and later airlifted to Boston Medical Center. There Gaskins was put on life support which his family reluctantly removed him from a few days later.Investigators found the alleged weapon near the scene. Auger had told police that she and Gaskins were walking through the parking lot when a man whom Gaskins had an ongoing misunderstanding with began speaking to him. She then heard gunshots and saw a blue Audi speed from the scene.The murder case remained unsolved until a few months ago when police linked Bonnett to the crime.Bonnett remains held without bail pending a bail review Nov. 22.Assistant District Attorney James P. Gubitose is prosecuting the case and Michael T. Phelan has been assigned to represent Bonnett for trial.Bonnett also is under indictment in Superior Court for allegedly trying to rob an 18-year-old boy as he walked toward his home on Timson Street on May 18, allegations he has denied.
