LYNN – A Lynn man said he is happy to be alive after he found a pipe bomb attached to his gas grill at 80 Collins St. on Saturday night. The incident marks the third of its kind to happen in one week in a neighborhood located on the Lynn-Swampscott line, where police say it appears someone is targeting victims.?Well, I guess I won?t be barbecuing anytime soon,” said the homeowner, who declined to say his name out of fear.Around 6:30 p.m. Saturday, he said he had returned home with his wife and was getting ready to grill some food for dinner, when he noticed the grill wasn?t working properly. As he peered into a cabinet to look at the propane tank, he said he got the fright of his life.?I reached in and felt something that wasn?t supposed to be there and saw a green wire and a steel pipe, about six-inches long,” he said. “I tried not to panic, went in the house, locked the door, shut off the gas to the house and got everyone in the car and called the police.”Within minutes, police evacuated a portion of the neighborhood and remained on scene until after midnight, where the State Police Bomb Squad used a robot to retrieve the device and later detonated it in the home?s backyard. Sunday afternoon, the lingering scent of gun powder continued to fill the air.Lynn Fire Department Arson Investigator Dave Legere said all three incidents had similar pipe-bomb devices.?The last two incidents (Essex and Collins streets) are not just two random acts, there is definitely a connection there,” he said. “We?re not sure about the third (that happened in Swampscott), but we are starting to believe they are all connected.”Legere said one of the more confusing pieces of the puzzle is how the suspect was able to place the pipe bomb in the grill without anyone in the home noticing, or anyone in the more than five surrounding homes that have a view of the victim?s backyard.?That?s one of the mysteries because it definitely took awhile to rig up,” he said. “He (owner) has cameras, but they don?t record and his father watches the monitor. (The incident) is just about bizarre as bizarre can be.”Just as perplexed by the case, the homeowner said he had gone out for a few hours on Friday, but couldn?t think of anyone who would want to harm him or his family.?Whoever is doing this, they are getting very technical about it and are getting better every time,” he said. “And it was definitely not a random act.”Evidence collected at the scene – fingerprints, pieces of the device, gun powder and wicks used, have been sent to the State Crime Lab to offer a clearer picture of the case.Collins Street is located about a mile away from Essex Street, where a pipe bomb exploded and blew out the windows in a vehicle Wednesday night. And a few days before that, a resident found a pipe bomb on Monday on nearby Hillside Avenue in Swampscott. A State Police Bomb Squad detonated the device, which was described as two propane tanks held together by duct tape with a small pipe attached to it.A reward of up to $5,000 is being offered by Fair Plan, an alliance of insurance firms for information regarding the three incidents.
