SALEM – A Lynn man who allegedly went on a three-month crime spree robbing area banks of thousands of dollars to “pay bills,” was indicted Friday afternoon by an Essex County grand jury.Scott Oliver, 47, of 30 Franklin St., #2, Lynn, is charged with three counts of armed robbery in connection with three bank robberies that began in July.Police say Oliver robbed the Sovereign Bank at 39 Exchange St. in July, the Salem Five Cent Savings Bank at 20 State St. on Aug. 21 and the Brotherhood Credit Union at 75 Market St. on Sept. 7.Oliver reportedly admitted to the holdups and told police he robbed the banks because he “needed money to pay bills” and denied any drug issues.Police said they recovered the money stolen from Brotherhood Credit Union.The indictments now move the case from Lynn District Court to Salem Superior Court where Oliver will be re-arraigned within a few weeks.In the meantime, he remains held at the Middleton Jail in lieu of $25,000 cash bail.He faces a potential life sentence in state prison on each of the three charges.Assistant District Attorney Jean M. Curran is prosecuting the case for the commonwealth.Indictments are not an indication of guilt, rather it is a legal process that allows a case to be transferred from District Court to Superior Court allowing for a more severe punishment.
