SALEM – A Revere plumber who admitted he dragged an elderly man through a Route 1 parking lot after trying to steal a hand saw from the victim’s pick-up truck may spend up to five years behind bars.Michael A. Anzilotti, 41, of 417 Revere Beach Boulevard, Revere, changed his innocent plea to guilty Monday in Salem Superior Court, admitting to charges of breaking and entering in the daytime with intent to commit a felony, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon on a person over 60, attempt to commit a crime of stealing and larceny of property over $250 before Judge Timothy Q. Feeley.Anzilotti was sentenced to serve 4-5 years in state prison, followed by three years of probation. He will be evaluated for substance abuse treatment and counseling as deemed necessary and subjected to random drug screenings.Anzilotti also agreed as part of the plea negotiations to pay $390 in restitution to the victim. The 61-year-old Saugus man told authorities he saw Anzilotti stealing tools from his truck, parked at the Home Depot on Broadway, Route 1 in Saugus at about 9:45 a.m. on Feb. 20, 2009.He tried to detain him by grabbing him by his sweatshirt, but Anzilotti jumped into a Toyota Highlander, dragging the victim before he fell to the ground. The victim injured his right elbow but he refused medical treatment at the scene, later going to Salem Hospital for his injuries.Police said Anzilotti was later identified by the victim.Assistant District Attorney Kristen R. Buxton told Feeley that the joint recommendation was based on Anzilotti’s record of similar crimes, his repeated criminal conduct and also because of his heroin addiction. The sentence imposed is immediate, meaning it eliminates any term of incarceration Anzilotti currently is serving involving a drug case in Boston. While out on bail, Anzilotti was arrested in the North End this past summer with three bags of heroin, for which he received two years in jail.In September Anzilotti was also caught by Salem Superior Court officers trying to discard a urine vial in the lock-up area after his bail was revoked because of the new arrest. He was represented by Attorney Steven J. Topazio. The judge credited Anzilotti with 18 days served.
