LYNN – An illegal men’s club on Market Street, complete with alleged prostitution, alcohol and gaming, has been busted by the Lynn Police. The manager of the club, George E. Hontzeas, 65, of 57 Ashland St., was arrested and charged with unlawful sale of alcohol, managing or operating a gaming business and operating an unlicensed club. He was arraigned Tuesday at Lynn District Court by Judge Ellen Flatley and was released on personal recognizance. A pre-trial hearing has been scheduled for Dec. 1.According to court documents, police say they received several complaints from Mayor Judith Flanagan Kennedy’s office in May about possible illegal activities taking place at the 36 Market St. club, located on the second floor. Police say they learned that the previous tenant, The Peristeri Mens Social Club, was no longer renting the second floor of the building and that the club had dissolved. The former president of the club said a new group had moved in, but were running an illegal and unlicensed club.As a result, detectives paid a visit to the club on May 31 and found a group of five men playing cards at a card table. Police say while no money was visible, one of the men was keeping notes on what appeared to be a ledger that kept track of money won and lost. Hontzeas, who claimed to the manager, was found standing behind a bar area, where a cooler was located with bottles of water, soda and beer. When asked where the permits were for the club, Hontzeas pointed to a three-leaf binder, saying, “My lawyer, Nick Curuby, told me to show you this if the police came by.” Police say the paperwork dated back to 2001 and had expired. After warning Hontzeas that he needed to get the proper paperwork, the officers left.In June, officers spoke with Curuby about the license situation and in July officers say they received more complaints of prostitution and illegal gaming activity at the club. So, on Aug. 5, officers went back to the club and again found a group of men smoking cigarettes, drinking alcohol and playing what appeared to be poker. Hontzeas was standing behind the bar and when officers asked him for the club’s license, he said, “tell me what I need to get.”While talking to him, police spotted a wad of cash in his pocket and seven Trojan condoms on the counter. Hontzeas was found to have $77 in his shirt pocket, $81 and several money orders in his pants pocket and $620 in his wallet. In all, $778 was seized, along with the seven condoms, a notebook, a binder, 12 cans of Budweiser beer, 17 cans of Bud Light beer, eight bottles of Heineken beer, four bottles of wine, two bottles of Scotch, a bottle of vodka and a bottle of Metaxa.Warrant checks were made on the other men at the club, who were allowed to leave. A criminal complaint was filed against Hontzeas at Lynn District and he was later arrested.
