MARBLEHEAD – A Marblehead man who was seriously injured while wind-surfing on Black Rock Beach Saturday underwent surgery Monday and is said to be slowly improving.A friend of the family, Thais Asaiante, said doctors at Boston Medical Center realigned 49-year-old Donald Burnett’s spine and that he woke up Tuesday morning.”There are small signs of improvement,” she said. “He is breathing on his own and we’re encouraged and hopeful to see his progress every day.”Police say Burnett was blown off the beach and across Nahant Road when the wind caught his kite. As a result, Burnett was dragged nearly 100 feet, slammed into nearby rocks and a fence and suffered breaks in his neck, numerous broken bones and a severe head injury. Before he went into surgery, Burnett was said to have been in traction and was moving his fingers and toes.”He’s awake now and trying to communicate, but he’s in a lot of pain, so we’re considering it a miracle that he survived and is making progress based on his injuries,” Asaiante said. “But because of his brain injury, it’s hard for him to communicate, so we’re really just taking things day by day.”Asaiante said Burnett’s wife, Christine, is thankful for all of the words of encouragement and help that her family has since received.Burnett was originally taken to Salem Hospital, where he was stabilized, and then airlifted to Boston Medical Center. Christine previously said that the doctors who have been treating her husband “are in shock” that he has survived such grave injuries.
