SAUGUS – Sharon Hamer took on a difficult job last year when she signed on as library teacher at the Belmonte Middle School. Her efforts have not gone unnoticed.Samuel Rippin, executive director of Finance and Operation, told the School Committee during a recent meeting that Hamer has received the Massachusetts Super Librarian Accolade from the Massachusetts School Library Association. What impressed Rippin most, he said, was that Hamer was nominated by her peers for the job she has done in rebuilding the middle school library.”I think that speaks volumes,” he said. “I’m not surprised knowing what she does.”It was just a year ago that the middle school held an open house during parent teacher conference night in order to showcase the newly remodeled library. Before that the library had been a largely ignored space, its shelves were mostly barren, the lighting poor, the furniture old and there was no librarian, a victim of budget cuts.Superintendent Richard Langlois vowed to get the library up and running again in the spring of 2008. Vice Principal Myra Monto spearheaded a rehabilitation project, wrote grants, solicited funds, held raffles and a wheel-a-thon and then hired Hamer to rebuild the library.”She had 30 years experience,” Rippin noted. “And I’m sure at times she’s felt she needed every bit to get this library up and running.”Hamer organized what few books the library had, unpacked new ones and introduced an electronic cataloging and circulation program. She said her biggest challenge was to get teachers back in the habit of using the space.Today the space is warm and welcoming with oversized leather chairs, new computers, and most importantly, books. And the students have flocked back.”Sharon had to take the lead and do the bulk of the work along with some dedicated volunteers,” Rippin said.Hamer will now help the elementary schools better utilize their libraries.”I feel I was just a cog in the wheel,” Hamer said. She said it was Langlois and Principal Geoff Bruno’s visions for the middle school that led to a renewal of the entire school.”That kind of support makes a difference,” she said, adding, “The program I’m trying to establish has also been embraced by the teachers.”Hamer said she was looking forward to helping out on the elementary school level.”Of course my ultimate goal would be to provide professional librarians at the elementary level as well,” she said. “We need to start training kids now for the (digital and visual) world they will live in when they are 30.”School Committee Chairman Wendy Reed said it was nice to see employees recognized for their accomplishments.”It must be so exciting to be nominated by your peers,” she said. “It is such an accomplishment.”
