LYNN – With the goal in mind to bring new businesses into the city and make those that are here stronger, city officials and members of the Lynn Area Chamber of Commerce met Tuesday to forge a collaborative effort.By working together, LACC Chairman John Olson said the public-private partnership would enhance city services and improve communications.”We want to help rebuild Lynn’s business community into a thriving business community,” he said.Mayor Judith Flanagan Kennedy said the chamber approached her on the idea that the city and the chamber work together several months ago and Tuesday’s meeting represented a starting point.”The goal in mind is to retain businesses in Lynn, bring new businesses to Lynn and make the businesses in Lynn stronger,” she said.By working together, Olson said the group could tackle several problems facing city officials on a day-to-day basis by educating business owners preempt problem situations.”For example, the sign ordinance, once it gets finalized, we can offer a how to for the businesses and easy ways for them to do business in Lynn,” he said. “And with the rat population, we can send out e-blasts and work with the Department of Public Works to get (garbage) lids to businesses.”Some city businesses seem uninformed, like the Asian community, according to City Hall volunteer and Southeast Asian Liaison Kirirath Saing.Offering to “be the bridge” between the Asian business community and the LACC, Saing said that community simply doesn’t know how to reach out for help to get to the next level.Olson stressed that the LACC is eager to get the Asian business community involved, but said the language barrier has posed a problem in the past.”We have not reached out as aggressively as we should be,” he said. “We have been meeting with the Latin business community over the last six months and part of the goal is to make the board a little less homogeneous than now.”For more information, visit www.lynnareachamber.com
