SALEM – A Lynn man who was intoxicated when he brutally punched and kicked a man last spring, causing numerous fractures to the victim in a South Street Terrace apartment, received three to five years in state prison Wednesday.Donald Keets, 29, of 29 Endicott St., pleaded guilty to a charge of assault and battery causing serious bodily injury before Judge Timothy Q. Feeley in Salem Superior Court Wednesday. The charges arise from an incident on the night of March 26, when 48-year-old Paul Bartlett said he was asleep in his home on South Street Terrace and was awoken by Keets punching and kicking him.The two men were associates, but no motive was known for the attack. Keets, who was intoxicated at the time of the incident, was reportedly dating the victim’s daughter.Hickey said Bartlett sustained fractures to his larynx, ribs, eye sockets and jaw and was hospitalized at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston for one week as a result of the injuries sustained.Assistant District Attorney Michael P. Hickey had lobbied for Keets to serve at least five years in prison, basing his recommendation of the serious injuries sustained by the victim.Defense lawyer Mark Schmidt explained to the judge that his client has had an alcohol problem “for years” and that he has wanted to accept responsibility from the beginning of the matter. He also told Feeley that the daughter of the victim, who was in court, reported to him that Bartlett and Keets would drink together and things could get out of hand, while explaining that this may or may not have been the case in the incident in question. In handing down the punishment, Feeley acknowledged that Keets was taking responsibility early and that “warranted” some credit and consideration by the court.
