SWAMPSCOTT – The national anthem filled the air at Monument Avenue in Swampscott during a Veterans Day observance Thursday morning before a brief ceremony to honor all veterans and active soldiers.Residents of Swampscott, along with families and friends of those serving in the military, gathered in appreciation with Swampscott officials, local veterans organizations and their auxiliaries and Swampscott Cub Scout Pack 55.U.S. Navy veteran and former pastor of First Church in Swampscott Rev. Dean Pedersen cordially welcomed all individuals who bared the chilly weather to commemorate all active soldiers and veterans of service who have dedicated their lives for the freedom of our country.”On this splendid Veterans Day, we must remember that many days are not so splendid for those who serve and have served,” said Pedersen. “To all souls overseas and those who have served and given up their lives for our freedom.”More than 40 veterans from Swampscott gathered in a line before the flagpole to be recognized for their fearless dedication.”May we bow our heads and pray for each soldier here, physically, spiritually and emotionally,” said Pedersen.Following prayer, Chairwoman of Swampscott Board of Selectmen Jill Sullivan read the poem “Invictus” by William Ernest Henley, a poem about those who face challenges with unconquerable spirit.”There is no level of gratitude great enough to thank all veterans and active military who give so much of their lives for our country,” said Sullivan.Marine Corps veteran Steve Defelice has attended the ceremony, “for many years past” and had a hard time putting into words what the observance of the holiday means to him. “It’s hard to articulate the importance of Veterans Day,” said Defelice. “But I am very appreciative of those who chose to join us today.”State Rep. Lori Ehrlich attended the ceremony “to honor the selfless work of our veterans,” she said.Following the ceremony, the public was welcomed to enjoy refreshments at the VFW Post on 8 Pine St.
