LYNN – Some were lucky enough to have scored a high-five from a stranger Sunday afternoon, while others chomped down on a Big Mac in an effort to check off items in a scavenger hunt benefiting the charity “Santa?s Helping Hands.”Groups of four gathered together at the Gannon Municipal Golf Course for the fourth annual event, where proceeds go toward the holiday charity for needy families, which began in 1964.Eileen McCarthy, president of the charity?s board of directors and her sister Patty who acts as vice president, said the scavenger hunt is just one of the many events held to raise money for the cause, which will dole out gifts at St. Joseph?s Church on Dec. 12.?We?re able to buy coats, shoes, toys and other items for the Lynn families, which are referred to us by social agencies,” she said. “We?re very grateful for the support and enthusiasm of those who took part in the scavenger hunt this year and for all of the volunteers that help us wrap the gifts as well.”McCarthy said the charity raised nearly $30,000 last year and she hopes to surpass the amount this year with help from the scavenger hunt.Organized by last year?s winning group, Lynn resident Michelle Stevens said 24 teams took part in the event, which she said raised about $2,500.?It?s wonderful that all these people came out on a Sunday afternoon for a great cause, especially in this economy,” she said. “Plus, it?s such a fun thing to do.”One group that had fun during the quirky search was Mayor Judith Flanagan Kennedy?s who were clad in pink t-shirts with the letters “PJ”, standing for Princess Judy a name she said she is referred to by some in The Daily Item blogs.Kennedy, who was also wearing a tiara, raved about the event, saying she had a blast while at the same time raised money for a good cause.?It was so much fun,” she said. “We got a little boy to show us his belly button and we even got thrown out of a store, that shall remain nameless, for taking pictures. It was great and I?d definitely do it again.”The winning scavenger hunt group walked away with four $25 gift certificates to the Tides Restaurant in Nahant, while other groups took home gifts from local businesses.
