LYNN – A homeless man who is well-known to the Lynn Police allegedly took a nap with a couple bottles of vodka on Baker Street Monday afternoon and became violent when officers tried to move him along.Thomas Joseph O’Connell, 49, was charged with assault and battery on a police officer, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and a warrant. He was arraigned Tuesday at Lynn District Court by Judge Dunbar Livingston and is due back for a pre-trial hearing on Jan. 10.According to court documents, officers responded to a report of a man sleeping on the street in the area of North Common at Baker Street, around 2 p.m. Upon arrival, officers say they immediately recognized O’Connell as one of the city’s “serial inebriates.” When they told him to stand up, O’Connell allegedly grabbed hold of a fire hydrant to steady himself, while repeatedly saying he wasn’t drunk. A strong scent of alcohol was said to have been wafting from O’Connell and police say it appeared that he had urinated on himself.Seeing that a lot of people, including school children, were walking around the area, police say they tried to take O’Connell into protective custody for his own safety, but alleged that he became belligerent toward them. When police noticed a bulge in his jacket and tried to see what it was, O’Connell allegedly smacked their hands away and was eventually taken into custody after a scuffle to the ground. A couple bottles of vodka were later found to have been the bulge in his coat.Police allege that O’Connell also shouted profanities at them and repeatedly threatened to fight them. Because of his soiled clothes and volatile behavior, police arranged for a wagon to pick O’Connell up and he waited on the grass because he was said to have been too drunk to stand. During the trip back to the station, he allegedly kicked the doors of the wagon several times and continued to struggle with officers when they tried to remove his jacket and other belongings before he was placed in a cell.
