LYNN – A Lynn man who was charged in connection with the theft of aluminum benches from Kiley Park has been ordered to spend some time behind bars.On Tuesday, Derek Marcel White, 35, of 15 Evelyn St., was charged with two counts of larceny over $250, two counts of receiving stolen property over $250 and one count of malicious destruction of property over $250. He was arraigned Wednesday at Lynn District Court by Judge Ellen Flatley and was ordered held in lieu of $1,000. A pre-trial hearing is scheduled for Dec. 13.Police say White, who described himself as self-employed in the construction field, was being taken into custody on outstanding warrants, when officers found aluminum bleacher benches in the yard of his home.During an interview with police, White said he got the benches “in the park down near Michigan Avenue I think” and “I know it?s behind Michigan Ave. because my cousin lives on Michigan Ave.”He went on to say, “I didn?t take apart no benches, they were sitting on the side of the park fence.” He did say, however, that he checked out the price of aluminum and learned that he could fetch “65 cents a pound” and “If I didn?t take it, someone else was going to.”
