SALEM – Additional indictments were handed down Thursday afternoon against a Level 3 sex offender already under indictment for narcotic and firearm charges.A special grand jury held over from a prior three-month sitting met Thursday, handing down three indictments against Karl Lamont Hackney, 45, formerly of 69 North Common St., Lynn, charging him with assault by means of a dangerous weapon, carrying a loaded firearm and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling. This newest set of charges are from an incident at his second floor apartment on June 2 when Hackney allegedly got embroiled in an argument with his 48-year-old sometimes girlfriend, assaulted her and then apparently shot bullets from a 9mm gun directly above his unit into the ceiling of an unoccupied unit.Hackney is also under indictment on narcotic and firearm charges when he was arrested the following day.Police officers were responding to his apartment June 3 on a report of gunshots when they saw Hackney walking down the street. He took off but was apprehended.During the foot chase, Hackney threw down a loaded 9mm silencer handgun, which police quickly retrieved. That gun is also believed to be the same weapon used the day before when he fired shots into the ceiling.Hackney has pleaded innocent to the June 3 charges and is held in lieu of bail at the Middleton Jail. He is scheduled to be in court on Dec. 6 for the matter.Assistant District Attorney Kristen R. Buxton is prosecuting both cases against Hackney. He previously was convicted of illegal possession of a firearm in 2002 out of Boston Federal Court. He presently is on probation at Salem Superior Court on a charge of resisting arrest in Lynn in 2008.He also was charged within that same case in 2008 with attempted rape and assault charges, but they were ultimately dropped when the witness apparently refused to cooperate once Hackney was expected to go on trial in Superior Court. Hackney instead pleaded guilty to resisting arrest, receiving a punishment of time served with two years of probation.
