PEABODY – A total of five people were arrested Thursday in what police are calling an elaborate shoplifting ring that took place at the Northshore Mall. The group, all from the New York City and Philadelphia areas are accused of stealing nearly $15,000 worth of merchandise from Express, Gap, Hollister, Abercrombie & Fitch, American Eagle, H&M and Aeropostale. The suspects include David Zamora, 28, of Queens, N.Y.; Steven Espitia, 22, of East Elmhurst, N.Y.; Diana Diaz, 27, of New York and Marcelino Vasquez, 27, and David Marquez, 38, both of Philadelphia. All were charged with larceny, receiving stolen property and possession of burglary tools. On Friday, Judge Matthew Nestor ordered Zamora?s bail set at $20,000, $10,000 for Vasquez, Espitia and Marquez, and $5,000 for Diaz. All are expected to return to Peabody District Court Jan. 3.Police say the suspects were caught with a list of area malls scribbled down in a notebook, along with the exact times that police in those districts changed shifts. The group allegedly stuffed merchandise into shopping bags lined with foil to avoid security detectors from going off at the doors. Two lookouts were said to have stood outside each store while two of the suspects swiped the goods and another waited in a minivan, which was used to house the bags.Police were tipped off by security at Gap and soon caught up with the van, which was being driven onto Route 128 from the parking lot.A second vehicle, a Mercury Sable with New York license plates, was stopped on Route 128 shortly after, which police believe was also involved in the heist. More merchandise including Diaz, Zamora and Espitia were found inside. The group is also suspected of being involved in another recent shoplifting incident at the Natick Mall.
