REVERE – One officer ran into a burning building to save a woman and her elderly father, while two other officers dove into cold waters to rescue teens trapped on a sandbar. Those actions may have been considered just part of their job for officers Gerard Salvati, Joseph Singer and Kenneth Bruker, but their peers and the Massachusetts Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) saw them as heroic acts worthy of recognition. All three were honored Tuesday at the Revere Police Headquarters with awards, citations and smiles all around.?These are unassuming men doing the amazing,” said Union Representative and Revere officer Joseph Rizzuti. “And this was an opportunity to recognize three of our own who are doing incredible things out there.”For Salvati, the afternoon of Sept. 23 changed from a normal day on patrol into an extraordinary one when he jumped into action at a raging fire at 16 Dana St. A distraught woman who was screaming incoherently at the scene, was said to have suddenly ran into the burning home when Salvati and another person on scene, Michael Zaccharia, quickly followed her in and found an elderly disabled man laying on the floor.Surrounded by smoke and flames, Salvati and Zaccharia were struggling carry the man out of the home when the woman suddenly collapsed from smoke inhalation. After a few more harrowing minutes, all were safely rescued.?Because of his (Silvati?s) actions on Sept. 23, a woman was able to see her children again and an elderly man can see his grandchildren?all because of his unselfish actions,” said FOP Treasurer Miller Thomas. “Everything we do has an action and a reaction.”The 16-year veteran of the police department humbly accepted his award, remarking that one never knows what the day will bring while working as a police officer.?Every day is a challenge,” Silvati said. “I just thank god that I was in the right place at the right time that day (to help).”While officers Singer and Bruker were not able to attend the event, they were equally praised by Rizzuti and their peers for their efforts in rescuing several teens trapped on a sandbar off of Revere Beach on May 19.?Singer and Bruker jumped in the water and ferried the four or five youths back to safety,” he said. “Along with help from the Fire Department, they did a great job.”
