NAHANT – The town of Nahant has filed a lawsuit against National Grid maintaining the town has suffered, and continues to suffer, substantial damage to its valuable public shade tree stock as a result of the underground leakage of natural gas from pipelines.Attorney Jan Schlichtmann of Beverly, who is representing the town, filed lawsuit Thursday in Salem Superior Court seeking relief and monetary damages from the court.According to the court documents, the leakage of natural gas from National Grid?s pipeline distribution system has “substantially contributed to the decline and or death of a substantial number” of Nahant?s public shade trees.Schlichtmann accuses National Grid, formerly known as Keyspan of New England, of failing to properly identify a remedy despite its own knowledge and recognition concerning the harm to the trees caused by the underground gas leaks.He?s also representing the town of Saugus in a similar lawsuit against National Grid.
