LYNN – With a recent rash of robberies in the city, police are warning residents to be on the lookout. The latest incident happened Wednesday morning at Eastern Bank on Market Street, where Lt. William Sharpe said a white male passed a threatening note to a teller, demanding cash around 8:41 a.m.Described as approximately 6-feet tall, clean-shaven and wearing a leather jacket with a plaid hooded sweatshirt, Sharpe said the thief made off with an undisclosed amount of money and managed to avoid being captured despite a search conducted by police on scene. Surveillance photos captured a clear image of the suspect, which police are hoping will trigger information from the public.Aside from the bank robbery, numerous reports of robberies have flooded the police department in recent weeks, including one on Rock Avenue around 9:40 p.m. Tuesday. In that case, the 22-year-old Lynn victim said two black males, one holding a gun, walked up to him demanding his money and snatched his wallet and cellular phone.”The most important personal preventative measure is to be aware of your surroundings and to take only what cash and valuables you need with you when out shopping or doing other activities,” Sharpe said.Since Jan. 1, a total of 205 robberies have been reported in the city, which include 13 commercial robberies involving a firearm; 33 commercial robberies without a firearm; 46 street robberies with a firearm and 113 street robberies without a firearm. So far, Sharpe said more than 10 robberies have been recorded this month.”This is an ongoing issue in the community and the department has been focused on addressing it by working with local businesses and community groups in making themselves less attractive targets for robbery,” he said.Due to the crime wave, police have released several safety precautions to lessen the chance of falling victim to crimes that typically occur during the holiday season: never leave a pocketbook in the shopping cart while looking away at merchandise; park your vehicle close to entrances and in well lit areas; take small items such as GPS units with you and also make sure the imprint from the suction cup device used to secure it to the windshield is wiped clear and that all items in the vehicle are removed from view.Since pickpockets, who tend to work in pairs, are also typical during this time of year, Sharpe advised people to keep cash or wallets in front pockets or in garment pockets that aren’t easily accessible.”When shopping, take the time to notice who is around you,” he said. “If a situation or person causes you to feel uncomfortable, trust your instincts and simply walk away. They may ask for directions, the right time of day, if you can make change, or they may pretend to know you.”An incident matching a pickpocket happened on Wednesday night around 7 p.m., where police say a man was putting his house key into his door on Chestnut Street, when two light-skinned black males walked up to him and stole his wallet. Police say a weapon wasn’t shown and the pair didn’t say a word to the victim. No arrests have been made.Anyone with any information on any of the recent incidents should contact Lynn Police at 781-595-2000.
