SALEM – Karl Lamont Hackney, the 45-year-old Level 3 Lynn sex offender, who escaped in handcuffs from Salem District Court, leading police on a manhunt for more than an hour earlier this month, was one of three people indicted Wednesday afternoon by an Essex County grand jury.Assistant District Attorney Kristen R. Buxton wasted no time in presenting evidence before grand jurors, resulting in a charge for escape being handed down against Hackney. The charge stems from an incident on the morning of Dec. 6 when Hackney was being escorted to Salem District Court shortly before noon and managed to break from court officers, flee out a side door and evade authorities for more than an hour. The escape touched off an extensive manhunt. Hackney was eventually found behind a home on Hawthorne Blvd., at 1:16 p.m.Also indicted was:Stephen Lunden, 31, no address available at this time, of Lynn, charged with carrying a firearm without a license, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling and carrying a firearm without a license having been previously convicted of three or more violent crimes concerns an incident in Lynn on Sept. 28.Kevin Terrero, 20, of 382 Chestnut St., Lynn, charged with armed assault with intent to murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, resulting in serious bodily injury, carrying a firearm without a license, subsequent offense, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling and being a felon in possession of a firearm, stemming from an incident in Lynn on May 31 when he allegedly shot a 20-year-old man in the stomach on Oneida Street.Indictments are not an indication of guilt: It is a legal process than allows a case to be transferred from District Court to Superior Court, allowing for a more severe punishment.
