WAKEFIELD – A Wakefield man was arrested on Saugus warrants and a slew of other charges Tuesday night, but not before he decided to take a dip in freezing waters in an attempt to escape police.Kenneth Lee Armstrong, 39, of 24 Pleasant St., was charged with resisting arrest, two counts of assault and battery on a police officer, larceny of a motor vehicle and three warrants after he was caught in an alleged stolen vehicle.According to Wakefield Police, at approximately 6 p.m. a Lojack signal was found coming from a stolen 1995 Dodge Caravan that Armstrong was allegedly driving in on Route 128. Officers spotted the vehicle near Quannapowitt Parkway and later questioned him. After running a check on Armstrong, police discovered that he had several outstanding warrants in Everett. As he was being placed under arrest, Armstrong allegedly said, “You’re not gonna do this” and elbowed an officer in the ribs, knocking him down and then ran away.Police set up a perimeter around the area, but Armstrong was nowhere to be found. About an hour later, police set up a waterline check around a nearby lake and found Armstrong waist-deep, shivering, in the freezing waters. After being told a K-9 would be sent in to get him if he didn’t come ashore, Armstrong came out of the water and said he could not feel his legs or feet. A crack pipe was found in one of his pockets during a pat frisk and he was taken to Lahey Clinic in Burlington for treatment of hypothermia.Police say Armstrong was scheduled to be arraigned at his hospital bed by officials from Malden District Court.
