SAUGUS – Police say a Chelsea man allegedly broke into a former city official?s home on Donna Road Friday afternoon.The suspect, Luis Santiago, 36, of 913 Broadway #2, was arrested and charged with breaking and entering into a building in the daytime for a felony, two counts of malicious destruction of property over $250, larceny over $250, giving police a false name and social security number and three warrants. He is expected to be arraigned today at Lynn District Court.According to Saugus Police Lt. Ronald Giorgetti, a neighbor reported hearing the sound of glass breaking and saw a man allegedly running toward the back of the home around 3 p.m.Upon arrival, Giorgetti said officers caught up with Santiago and chased him through Breakheart Reservation as he ran toward Kasabuski Rink and was captured. Jewelry was later found thrown on the ground near the home, which was allegedly stolen from inside.Santiago?s leased car, a Ford Escape with New York license plates, was also found parked outside the single-family residence.?We believe he was by himself and that he forced his way into the rear of the home,” Giorgetti said. “Because of the alert resident, police were able to catch him.”No one was home at the time of the incident.
