LYNN – Ho, ho, oh, no! The threat of another snowstorm is on the horizon for Sunday night into Monday, which could possibly dump up to a foot of snow on the North Shore area. While still days away, the potential storm could either make a direct hit on Greater Boston, or it could take another track, which would most likely be less aggressive.Either way, City Public Works Commissioner Jay Fink is keeping a close eye on the sky.?We?re standing by right now because weather forecasters are saying it could go either way in order to cover themselves, so we?re going to be prepared and take precautions,” he said. “But nothing will be set in motion until Saturday.”Between city equipment and private contractors, Fink said about 225 plows are available for use during a large-scale storm.?Some of the equipment is 20 years old and other big graders and backhoes date back to the 60s,” he said. “But, if needed, we?ll use them and be ready to go.”With a budget of approximately $700,000 to cover snow and ice removal, Fink said that amount is typically exceeded every year.?We?ll have to see how kind Mother Nature is this year,” he quipped.Monday?s snowfall racked up a tab of roughly $50,000, according to Fink, which consisted of sanding roads to keep them from icing over.?We expected a dusting from the storm, but by 1:30 in the afternoon, we noticed that it started to accumulate and that there was a sheen on the road,” he said. “Fortunately we got out there early enough so that there wasn?t gridlock for the evening commute, but rather the stop and go traffic in the normal areas.”A similar dusting on Wednesday afternoon resulted in crews gearing up for sanding operations around the city.?We don?t want to waste chemicals, so we typically wait a little while to see what happens,” he said. “However, we know storms are coming – the atmosphere is cooling off, the temperatures are falling and accumulation is definitely on the way.”
