LYNN – A Lynn man accused of viciously attacking and robbing an elderly woman in her own home Tuesday night is spending some time behind bars, while the victim, bruised and frightened, is being comforted by family.Michael Leroy Collins, 56, of 50 Andrew St., was charged with armed robbery, armed burglary and assault and battery on a person over 60. He was arraigned Wednesday at Lynn District Court by Judge Stacey Fortes-White and ordered held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing scheduled for Feb. 1.According to court documents, police responded to a report of a robbery in the 200-block of South Common Street around 8 p.m., where an elderly woman had allegedly been hit over the head with an object. Upon arrival, officers found the woman in pain and bleeding from a head laceration, who still managed to describe her alleged attacker before being taken to Union Hospital. While police say the victim is 94 years old, a relative who declined to give her name out of fear of retaliation claims the woman is actually over 100 years old.”She’s a feisty lady, very independent, but is upset with everything that’s happened, especially because she knows her attacker,” she said.Hours before she was assaulted, the victim had ventured out for her weekly bingo game before returning home for the evening. She said she heard a knock at her apartment door and opened it “just a crack,” when she instantly recognized her visitor, Collins, who has allegedly come to her in the past, begging for money. Before she could shut the door, police say Collins allegedly pushed it open, nearly knocking the elderly woman to the ground, and closed the door behind him. Once inside, Collins allegedly hit the woman over the head with an unknown object with such force that blood began to trickle down her face.He then pushed her against a table, grabbed her pocketbook and began rifling through its contents. When he didn’t find any money, Collins allegedly shoved his hands into her pockets.”She was holding a pen at the time because she was doing a crossword puzzle and managed to stab him in his thigh,” said the victim’s relative.Collins, angered by the stabbing, allegedly swore at the victim and said, “If you want to make this hard, I’ll kill you!” At that point, Collins continued going through the victim’s pockets, and after finding nearly $400 in cash, quickly ran out of the apartment as the victim stood there stunned.”She managed to stagger out of her apartment into the hallway and called out to my uncle, who lives in the building for help,” she said. “She was bloody and scared.”Police later found Collins walking on Neptune Boulevard and arrested him. The relative said she is particularly in fear of Collins because he allegedly attacked her uncle last November, breaking his nose and injuring his eye. Collins was not arrested in that alleged incident. The victim, who received several stitches for her head wound, said she was too shaken up to speak about her ordeal on Wednesday night.
