LYNN – Police say a Lynn teen who spent his Thursday morning shoveling driveways for extra cash had the hard-earned money stolen from him by a man armed with a machete. The 14-year-old reported the brazen theft to police around 1:30 p.m., saying he had shoveled snow in the Highlands and made approximately $54. As he walked home toward Essex Street, he said a light-skinned black male in his early 20s came up to him, pointed a machete to his chest and demanded he fork over his money.Frightened, he handed over the wad of cash to the suspect, who then bolted down Rockaway Street.”That is just sad,” said Ward 4 City Councilor Richard Colucci. “People are crazy in this world and it’s just getting worse.”At the time of the incident, the suspect was wearing a red Adidas jacket, a black hooded sweatshirt, a red backpack and black, red and white Nike sneakers. He also had a small, lined beard.Lt. William Sharpe said the boy’s family had attempted to track down the suspect themselves prior to the teen reporting the incident. Because of that, Sharpe said the crime may have occurred as early as 12:30 p.m.”I should give the kid his $50 back,” Colucci said. “This is a travesty. How can a guy carry a machete in broad daylight?”Colucci said his ward, which is known for violent crimes, has been on an upward swing as of late and is surprised by such a cruel crime.”I thought the area was actually getting better,” he said. “But this is pretty screwed up. It’s the first time I’ve heard of anything like this in my life.”Sharpe said police searched the area after the report, but could not locate the suspect. The victim was not injured during the incident. Anyone with information is urged to call the police at 781-595-2000.
