REVERE – A massive water main break on Route 1A north Wednesday morning snarled traffic to a slow crawl for both the morning and evening commutes.Revere Police say the break happened sometime around 8 a.m., prompting the closure of a section of the roadway between Butler Circle and Revere Street. Commuters were encouraged to take alternate routes, as the roadway quickly became clogged with heavy traffic.Captain Michael Murphy said the roadway has experienced breaks in the past, but was unsure of the exact age of the burst pipe.”Like many areas in greater Boston, the water pipes may be nearly 100 years old and frequently have problems in deeply cold weather conditions,” he said.Department of Public Works crews were on scene Wednesday evening repairing the broken pipe, while police manned the area and directed traffic. The road was re-opened at about 10:40 p.m.A St. Mary’s girls hockey game was postponed an hour from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Connery Rink because the opposing team from Fontbonne Academy in Milton got stuck in the gridlock.
