LYNN – A Malden woman allegedly became so enraged when her daughter fell and hit her head while playing, that she turned her anger toward her mother and beat her with a broomstick.Kelly Dawn Smith, 35, of 144 Oakland St., was charged with domestic assault and battery and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, broomstick. She was arraigned Wednesday at Lynn District Court by Judge Ellen Flatley and released on personal recognizance. A pre-trial hearing has been scheduled for March 28.According to court records, police responded to a report of a domestic disturbance on Lynn Shore Drive on Jan. 27. As officers pulled up to the front of the building, they were met by a witness, who said her mother called to tell her that her sister’s 3-year-old daughter had fallen and injured her head and that the sister was causing a commotion about it.The 61-year-old victim, who is the legal guardian of the young girl, said the child was fine, but planned on taking her to a local hospital to be evaluated. When officers checked on the victim, she explained that the little girl was jumping on a piece of furniture and accidentally fell. After that happened, the girl’s mother, Smith, allegedly became “hysterical” and started screaming at her mother and pushing her in front of the child.The victim said she walked into another room to get away, but was followed by Smith, who allegedly punched her on her back and continued to yell and swear at her. When Smith was told to leave, she grabbed some of her belongings, walked to the front door and allegedly grabbed an orange-colored broom and repeatedly hit the victim on her back.Having fallen to the floor, the victim said she struggled to get up and managed to snatch the broom away from Smith. Police say they saw at least two marks on the victim’s back that were 6 inches in length and red and swollen. She was advised to seek a restraining order against Smith.The Department of Children and Families and Elder Abuse program were notified of the incident.
