Manning Field could be the new home field for the Mass. United Football Club soccer team, which is waiting to hear the city’s decision on that subject.Mass. United, which was founded in 2009, has applied to use Manning as its home field for all six of its regular-season games in the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL).As the date of its first scheduled home game is fast approaching (a twinbill on May 14-15), team general manager Jonathan Beck said that the program has had to tell the league it will be playing its home games at Manning. Beck said this statement can be withdrawn if things don’t work out, but, he added, “The City of Lynn and Manning Field has and always will be our number-one choice.”Mass. United is scheduled to play 12 games in the regular-season league schedule against teams from New England and Mid-Atlantic states like New Hampshire, New York and New Jersey. Beck is projecting a roster of between 25 and 30 players. Roster spots are open to both professional and amateur players, he said. The team has previously used fields rented from the City of Boston for games. Meetings with the City of Lynn, including John Kasian of the Office of Economic and Community Development, began at City Hall last year.”The decision-making is down to the City of Lynn, the mayor and officials,” Beck said. “We’re hoping for the best. We’ll see.”While the proposal requested the use of the field for six games in total, Beck said the team also proposed playing tournament games there as a source of revenue “if the city wanted to.”He added, “We are in a position to bring national and regional cups to Manning Field. It could be an additional source of income.”Mass. United has already visited Manning Field, if not for its league games. A few players served as volunteer referees at the field on Saturday for a Lynn Youth Soccer tournament, and there are talks for team personnel to help out at other community events at the field. The team is owned by Jim Antonakas, who is also the head coach.”In my opinion Lynn is pretty much Soccer City, Massachusetts,” Beck said. “What better place to have a professional team call home?”
