LYNN – A puppy was rescued from an abandoned apartment engulfed in flames on Albany Terrace Sunday evening. The blaze broke out at approximately 6:30 p.m., at 5 Albany Terrace, where fire crews battled thick plumes of smoke and flames pouring out of the second floor apartment.?The conditions were really nasty,” said Lynn Fire District Chief John Barry. “Albany Terrace is known to us for its congestion and extremely tight conditions. We really cringe when we get a call for the area, but they did a great job containing the fire and putting it out.”Jaron Clifton, the third-floor resident of the building, stood in shock on the sidewalk holding his infant son wrapped in a white blanket.?The woman on the second floor (name not released) abandoned her dogs, nine puppies and two big dogs for three weeks,” he said. “They just bark all day long and keep my kids up late, so I called Animal Control a bunch of times. But nothing happened.”Clifton said, prior to the fire, an alleged smell of animal feces had become so overwhelming he was forced to run his air conditioner at all times.?It?s cruelty to animals,” he said while shaking his head.Lynn Fire Arson Investigator Don Baron said the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (MSPCA) was scheduled to make a visit to the apartment today regarding the allegations.?It?s a he said-she said situation right now,” he said. “Nobody was living in the (second floor) apartment, but she (tenant) was keeping the dogs there until she got homes for them.”As for the blaze, Baron said it does not appear to be suspicious. He said when the tenant showed up on Sunday evening, the power was off in the apartment, so she called the property manager to turn it back on.?It?s possible that when they turned it back on, there might have been something plugged into an outlet (that sparked the fire),” he said. “But it?s all under investigation.”The second floor tenant declined to comment at the scene as she held the surviving puppy and cried. No injuries were reported. An adult dog, a puppy, and two cats also managed to escape the fire unscathed.
