Town officials only had to look as far as Mark Cullinan’s home on Ocean Street the last time they hired a new town administrator.Although the search committee may have to look a little farther this time, Town Moderator Dave Conlin said he hopes to present selectmen with candidates for the town administrator position by the end of July.”We’re hoping in a couple of weeks we’ll have committee volunteers, then at the end of (July) be able to have a crop of candidates for the position,” said Conlin last week. “It may be unduly optimistic, but that’s the plan.”Town Administrator Mark Cullinan officially notified town officials Friday, June 24 that he planned to retire in November after 17 years as town administrator. This is the second time that Nahant has sought a town administrator since local voters and the state legislature approved the position in 1992. According to public records, Cullinan was paid $127,310 in 2010. But his salary total came from two positions: $107,150 for serving as Town Administrator and the balance for serving as Town Engineer. The Act Establishing the Position of Town Administrator for the town of Nahant stipulates that the town moderator form a town administrator search committee to fill a vacancy in the town administrator position. The committee is charged with screening all applicants for the town administrator position and then submitting at least three applicants to the selectmen for their consideration.Selectmen will ultimately, and by majority vote, appoint the new town administrator. But the search committee will consist of nine residents in total.Of these members, selectmen will select three, the advisory and finance committee will select one member and one member will be selected by the town personnel committee. All other members will be appointed by the town moderator, Conlin said.Conlin said Wednesday that he has begun seeking applicants for the search committee.Once it is formed, the committee will advertise the soon-to-be-vacant town administrator position in several general interest and professional publications, Conlin said. He added that he will accept applications for the search committee until July 15. Conlin said that people interested in volunteering for the search committee can contact him through Town Hall or at [email protected].
