SAUGUS – Students at Oaklandvale Elementary School may be noticing the aroma of French toast and cinnamon when they arrive at school in the morning. And, if they arrive early enough, students will find plenty of warm bagels, cereal and yogurt, depending on what?s on the menu.Sam Rippin, the Director of Finance and Operations for Saugus Schools, said it?s all part of Oaklandvale?s new breakfast program, which runs from 8 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and is entering its third week.?The day I went they had French toast sticks, baked apples and cut-up peaches,” said Rippin. “It was a fine offering. I thought it was very well-done.”Breakfast costs $1.50 at full price, and just 30 cents at the reduced price. Menus can be found on the district website at saugus.k12.ma.us.Rippin said the program is mandated at Oaklandvale because the school has a higher percentage of students who receive free and reduced lunch. But if it turns out to be a success, he may implement it at other schools.?The rationale is, if you don?t (offer it), they probably won?t eat breakfast,” said Rippin. “I?m a big proponent of equity. Yes, we?re starting at the Oaklandvale because we have to, but I want to get it going at all the schools. We think that breakfast is a good thing for elementary kids.”Oaklandvale isn?t the only school to serve breakfast in Saugus. The Belmonte Middle School recently started serving it as well and Rippin said he?s hoping to get up to 100 kids.Reading Specialist Joanne Simonelli said breakfast has gotten off to a slow start so far, but is expecting more students to participate once word spreads.?We are anticipating it growing especially once the weather gets bad,” said Simonelli. “It?s a new concept. We haven?t had that in Saugus before. It?s spreading the word and just seeing how it goes. We?re getting more and more kids as time goes on. It?s only been in effect for two weeks now.”Matt Tempesta can be reached at [email protected]. You can follow him on Twitter @MattTempesta.
