LYNN – The St. Mary’s football team showed on Saturday night that it doesn’t need to be on the field for great lengths of time to still put up some staggering numbers as it delivered a barrage of big plays that left North Shore Tech’s head spinning.Todd Collier scored touchdowns on two of the Spartans’ first three plays from scrimmage as St. Mary’s piled up 308 total yards on only 25 snaps in a 40-8 win over the Bulldogs.Click here for a photo gallery.”We’re pretty fortunate to have some talented players and a talented team,” St. Mary’s coach Matt Durgin said. “I thought that we came out ready to go and not looking ahead to Arlington Catholic next week. But certainly we need to shore some things up.”Cory Donahue got the Spartans (5-0) off to a fast start as he returned the opening kick to the North Shore 40-yard line. On the very next snap, Collier raced around right end and dashed to the end zone for an 8-0 St. Mary’s lead just 24 seconds into the contest.North Shore would take over five minutes off the clock on its first drive of the game but the march stalled at the St. Mary’s 44 and the Bulldogs punted. One play later it was 16-0 as Collier bolted off tackle and went 74 yards to the house, giving him 114 yards rushing in only two touches.North Shore again did an efficient job of moving the ball on the Spartan defense, going on another lengthy march, but came up empty as it had to punt early in the second quarter.St. Mary’s then showed the diversity of its offense as it called upon quarterback Jonathan Capano to obliterate the Bulldog defense and he did via a perfectly thrown 40-yard touchdown pass to Randolf Thurman to make it 24-0 on only 10 offensive plays.”Johnny works hard on that every day in practice and he came out and did a nice job for us,” Durgin said. The Spartan passing game was back at it on the next series as a 50-yard completion to tight end Andrew Olson moved the ball to the North Shore one. Collier powered in on the next play for a 32-0 lead with 4:00 left in the half.North Shore would again move into Spartan territory late in the half but Kevin Romulus’ interception thwarted the march and sent the teams to the break. It stayed 32-0 until late in the third when Collier was back at it again. Only this time it was Jordan Collier doing the damage as his 55-yard dash gave St. Mary’s a 40-0 lead after three.Jazmanny Sanchez would get the Bulldogs on the board with 7:12 left in the game.
