The Lynnfield football team was 37 seconds away from pulling off one of the season’s stunning wins and, with it, throwing the NEC/CAL Tier 3 race into complete chaos. But for a second straight year, the football gods were not in the Pioneers’ corner.Hamilton-Wenham’s Elliott Burr’s one-yard run and 2-point conversion with 37 ticks left sent the game to overtime, where quarterback Trevor Lyons scored on fourth down to give the unbeaten Generals a 22-14 win.”My kids played so well,” Lynnfield coach Neal Weidman said. “They deserved to win this game but that didn’t happen. Hamilton-Wenham is a great team.”The Generals (7-0, 2-0 NEC/CAL Tier 3) dominated for much of the first 30 minutes as Burr’s two-yard run gave his club a 6-0 lead after one quarter.Lynnfield’s offense had been swimming upstream for most of the half but it got out of neutral late in the second and pushed in front when Kyle McGah capped a 69-yard drive with a five-yard run. Alex Roper’s PAT made it 7-6 at the break.”That touchdown was a huge momentum boost for us,” Weidman said. The Pioneers nearly paid that momentum off with another score early in the third quarter, but Mike Karavetsos was picked off in the end zone. Moments later, H-W fumbled and Pioneer linebacker Tyler Palumbo scooped up the loose pigskin and returned it 34 yards to the house for a stunning 14-6 lead.”The entire defense really had a phenomenal game,” Weidman said. But in a near carbon copy of their three-point win over Lynnfield a year ago, the Generals put together a season-saving fourth quarter.Lyons engineered a drive that went 66 yards and was capped by the Burr one-yard plunge. In the overtime, Lyons would score on fourth down before the General defense held the Pioneers at the five.Beverly 33, Gloucester 21At Hurd Stadium, the Panthers (6-1, 2-0 NEC/CAL Tier 2) had to withstand an early barrage by the winless Fishermen as Gloucester took a 14-0 first quarter lead.
