LYNN – After losing to Georgetown, 4-1, back in October, the Lynnfield girls soccer team sat at 2-5-5 and was in serious danger of not making the state tournament. But the Pioneers got hot and reached the postseason and found themselves meeting the Royals in the Division 3 North semifinals on Thursday at Manning Field.Unfortunately for Lynnfield, the Royals weren’t ready to become the next victim on the Pioneers checklist. Despite being outshot 16-6 for the game the Royals got a goal from Kristin Hogan off a corner kick with 18:04 left in regulation to take a 1-0 win and a spot in Saturday’s North final (12:30) against St. Mary’s.”We had our chances and they didn’t go our way today,” Lynnfield coach Mark Vermont said. “Georgetown is a good team and they were able to cash in the chance they got.”For much of the night, the Pioneer midfielders had done a number on Georgetown, keeping the Royals from generating any sort of steady attack. The problem for Lynnfield was that it couldn’t get anything past Devin Cudmore in the Georgetown net.Three times in the first 12 minutes of the second half, Lynnfield had chances from near point blank range, but Alison Johnson, Alex Prach and Allegra Dicesare all came away empty handed.Eventually Georgetown was able to steady itself and began to generate some offense of its own. On back to back corner kicks, the Royals had shots ring off the crossbar.A third corner was not far behind and this time the Royals were on the mark as Hogan picked up the loose ball to the left of the Lynnfield net and ripped a shot past Nareh Sahakian. The Pioneers took that punch and tried to deliver one of their own as Emily Stewart’s shot bounced over the head of Cudmore, but defender Taylor Nelson was able to clear the ball off the goal line. Even more damaging for Lynnfield’s chances would be two chances at an open net that both sailed just wide of the mark.”We did everything we could to get a goal,” Vermont said. “We just didn’t put one in.”Lynnfield called time out with 10 minutes left to try and set up a final push but the Royals packed it in defensively and were able to hang on down the stretch.
