LYNN – Coming into the annual Powder Puff game between English and Classical on Sunday at Manning Field, Bulldogs coach Dick Newton had a hunch that he might have to throw the ball to have a chance at success against the Rams.Well, judging by the performance quarterback Tye Lewis put on, that hunch was genius.Lewis completed 12-of-14 passes for 313 yards and four touchdowns while Taylor Newhall and Briana Moreno each hauled in two scores as the Bulldogs racked up 360 yards of offense in a 28-7 win, their third straight over the Rams.Click here for a photo gallery.”Speed is such a key in this game and we knew that they had a lot of it,” Newton said. “So we thought we might have to throw to have a chance and in practice we knew we had something with Tye and with Taylor and Briana being able to catch like they can.”Classical won the toss and elected to put a strong wind at its back for the first quarter. The Bulldogs took the ball and wasted little time in solving the Rams secondary.A 29-yard dart from Lewis to Newhall moved the ball to the English 48. Lewis added a 12-yard scramble before she took to the air again, hitting Moreno behind the secondary for a 40-yard score and a 6-0 lead in a little over two minutes.”(English) was hitting on all cylinders from the start,” Classical coach Rob Smith said. “They took us right out of what we wanted to do.”The Rams gained 32 yards on their first snap, a pass completion from Kim Eldred to Jerrica DelosSantos, but would wind up gaining only 29 more total yards all day thanks to a swarming English defense.Lewis and Moreno brought the ball inside the Classical one late in the quarter but linebacker Chelsey Bartlett blasted through and stopped Lewis on a fourth-down play. The Bulldogs still would increase the lead, though, with a backbreaking stretch as time ran down in the first.First, English made an end-zone tackle of Jennie Erekson for a safety. Then, following the ensuing free kick, Lewis hit Moreno deep down the right sideline for a 58-yard score and a 15-0 lead after one.”If we had to run, we knew it was going to be tough against them. So that’s why we decided to go with the pass and it paid off,” Newton said.English continued to stonewall the Rams on defense, forcing a pair of punts early in the second period. It was off the second punt that the Bulldogs had a short field and put it to good use.Lewis dropped back and found Newhall wide open for a 42-yard touchdown and a 22-0 lead after Moreno’s extra point. The Bulldogs nearly got another score as time ran out in the half when Newhall made a leaping catch in front of three defenders but was stopped six inches short of a touchdown. The third quarter turned into a defensive struggle as neither team could put together a sustained drive. The stalemate continued until midway through the fourth when Eldred threw a strike to Kim O’Brien for a 51-yard touchdown that gave the Rams a bit of life. That reprieve lasted exactly two plays as Lewis hit Moreno for 26 yards and then threw her fourth TD of the game, this one to Newhall from 50 yards for the game’s final score.”We had no answer for their wide receivers,” Smith said. “They took our defensive backs to school. We did our best but English came out and played a fantastic game.”The game was marred by an ugly collision late in the second quarter that saw a Classical player taken off the field for precautionary reasons on a stretcher. All reports came back positive on the player’s condition after the game.
