WORCESTER – For the second time in three years, a Lynn Pop Warner team will be visiting the land of Mickey Mouse.Completing a historic run through the Eastern Mass and New England playoffs, the East Lynn ‘A’ team rode the back of a defense that forced six turnovers, including a game winning 66 yard interception return by Steve Collins with 7:52 remaining, to clinch a 14-6 win over Hyde Park at Commerce Bank Field and with it a trip to the Pop Warner national championships in Orlando, FL.”When the playoffs started, we said that we were going to have to win with defense because more often than not the offenses will cancel each other out,” Bulldogs coach Dave Ball said. “We have a great group of players and all of them have worked hard and we needed all 30 of them to be successful.”Facing an undefeated Cowboys team that had barely been scored upon in reaching the New England finals, East Lynn was opportunistic in every way despite being outgained 184-68 in the contest.Hyde Park’s Demetrius Leary muffed the opening kick and Collins recovered at the Cowboys 16. It wouldn’t be the last time Collins was in the right place.”That’s what Steve has done all year,” Ball said. “Good players are always around the football and when we need a big play he is always there.”The Bulldogs couldn’t turn the opening into points as Hyde Park held on downs. Later in the quarter, East Lynn had another short field after the Cowboys were stopped on a fourth down play at their 34 but again the offense came up short as Marcos Etchavarria Jr. was sacked on fourth down.Moments later, the Cowboys gave the ball right back as quarterback Manny Almonte fumbled and the Bulldogs recovered at the 42. One play later, Collins took it 45 yards down the left sideline for a touchdown and an 8-0 lead after Richard Newhall’s kick.”Hyde Park is an excellent defensive team,” Ball said. “We knew is was going to be difficult to move the ball against them.”The Cowboys drove to the East Lynn 35 early in the second quarter but Almonte was stopped on fourth-and-three. The Bulldog defense would also shut down a final Hyde Park chance late in the second quarter when Anthony De La Cruz intercepted a pass with 48 seconds left in the half. The defensive stalemate continued in the third quarter as each team got the ball but failed to generate any points as the tension ratcheted up. Early in the fourth, the Cowboys were on a drive when Collins delivered the game’s decisive moment.Almonte looked down the right sideline for Ato Botsio but Collins stepped in front of the pass at the East Lynn 34 and returned it 66 yards to the house to give the Bulldogs a 14-0 lead.Hyde Park looked to be on the way to an answering score on the ensuing possession but Mariano Davis, who was brilliant all game, fumbled and East Lynn’s Justin Lewis recovered at the Bulldog 15 ith 6:00 left.Davis would get his team on the board with 4:11 left but when Almonte fumbled away Hyde Park’s last chance with 2:07 left, the Bulldogs celebration was on.”This is very special,” Ball said. “We saw the best teams in the playoffs and this team rose to the occasion.”
