SALEM – A pair of teams that played for championships last winter were on display in the marquee matchup of the Salem State Hockey Jamboree at Rockett Arena on Sunday. And in the end, it was the team that lost in a North final that showed it is more than capable of heading back there again this season. In a convincing performance against defending Division 3 champion Marblehead, Saugus blasted to a 4-0 lead and led by a hat trick from Saige Tait, the Sachems cruised to a 5-1 win over the Headers.”Of all the scrimmages we’ve had so far, that was probably the best we’ve looked so far,” Saugus coach Jeff Natalucci said. “When we use our speed, that’s how we can play.”The Headers were breaking in a new defense core and several new forwards and the inexperience showed at times.”We make a bunch of mental mistakes that turned into goals,” Marblehead coach Bob Jackson said. “The positive thing is that we made improvements from where we were a week ago.”Saugus uncorked a 12-shot barrage on Marblehead goalie Mike Harper in the first 25-minute half and got on the scoreboard at 5:06 when Drew Oxley made a perfect pass to Kurt Rodrigues at the top of the crease for a 1-0 lead.Just under five minutes later, Tait got three whacks at a Rodrigues rebound and got it past Harper for a 2-0 lead on the power play.Saugus’ speed continued to give the Headers’ new defense core problems and the lead went to 3-0 when Tait ripped home a one-timer off a Nick DeSimone feed at 13:30. Freshman Anthony Cieri completed the first-period dominance when he picked up a turnover in the slot and beat Harper 5-hole.”When we are able to use our speed like that, I think that we can skate with anybody,” Natalucci said. The Sachems took three straight penalties to begin the second half but Marblehead couldn’t convert. Tait completed his hat trick at 10:10, assisted by Steve Kay and Nick Sweeney, with Ian Maag breaking up Nick Hegarty’s shutout bid at 15:19.Peabody 7, Lynn 2The Tanners rattled off five unanswered goals after getting in an early 1-0 hole to the Jets, who were without three defensemen because of disciplinary issues and injury.Ryan MacDonald’s shorthanded goal gave the Jets a 1-0 lead at 4:37. Erik Hennessey tied the game 65 seconds later for the Tanners.Matt McIsaac gave Peabody the lead for good at 8:55 and scored again at 11:33, sandwiched by an Eric Costa goal. Mike Chiappini made it 5-1 later in the first.Mark Brazell scored for the Jets to make it 5-2 before Reed Foster and Tom Burns closed the scoring.Swampscott 4, Winthrop 1The Big Blue stunned one of the preseason favorites in the NEC North as they scored four first-half goals. Chris Carman had a goal and two assists with Gino Cresta adding a goal and an assist.Tyler Peterson, Nunzio Morretti and Ryan Cresta also had goals for Swampscott.Beverly 4, Salem 1Four different Panthers recorded goals as they cruised past the improving Witches. Tiorano and Marco Mazzarelli.St. John’s 2, Danvers 1The Super 8 runner-up was in trouble as the Falcons had a 1-0 lead into the final five minutes before rallying to tie the game and then win it with 19.4 seconds left in regulation.
