SAUGUS – Nine periods to get over .500.That was the goal for the Saugus hockey team this week, to win all nine periods it had on its schedule. And that’s exactly what the Sachems did.Overcoming a 1-0 deficit just 97 seconds in against Marblehead on Saturday at Kasabuski Arena, Saugus scored the game’s final four goals, including three third-period goals, to earn a 4-1 win over the Headers and their third straight win.Click here for a photo gallery.”That third period was probably the best period we’ve had all season,” Saugus coach Jeff Natalucci said. “This was a good stretch for us this week. We talked about that on Monday that we had a chance to get back over .500 and we did that.”Saugus’ speed proved to be too much for the Headers (3-4-1) to handle in the third period but it didn’t take away from what coach Bob Jackson termed his team’s best performance to date.”We told the kids before the third that Saugus would step up,” Jackson said. “They are a quality team but I thought this was our best game of the year in a lot of ways.”The Headers came out flying and stunned Saugus when Nick Perry scored on his team’s first shot for a 1-0 Marblehead lead.Momentarily staggered by the opening salvo, Saugus regained its composure and began to generate plenty of quality scoring chances. But senior goalie Mike Harper came up with eight first-period stops to keep it 1-0 after the opening 15 minutes.”Marblehead worked extremely hard and had guys in our face seemingly every time we had the puck,” Natalucci said. The Sachems’ top unit then went about shifting the momentum early in the second.Kurt Rodrigues was sprung on a breakaway but his backhander missed the net. Staying with the play, Rodrigues made a perfect pass in front to Drew Oxley for a quick shot past Harper to tie the game.Midway through the period, Marblehead had a chance to put a little distance on the Sachems when it got a :41 5-on-3 advantage. But Saugus’ penalty kill was up to the challenge, killing off the advantage and with it keeping the momentum Oxley had given the Sachems.Early in the third, Harper was called on to come up big when the Sachems went on the power play but failed to convert. As it turned out, it was the beginning of a long period for Marblehead. The Sachems continued to pepper Harper, getting six shots in one 30-second span before Oxley finally paid off the constant pressure with his second goal of the game for a 2-1 lead.”We could have easily gotten frustrated early on but they responded well,” Natalucci said. “That shows a lot of the maturity that we have.”It stayed 2-1 until the final five minutes when Saugus went in for the knockout.Taking a pass in neutral ice, Nick Taylor moved into the zone and fired a shot past a screened Harper with 3:30 left for a two-goal lead. Rodrigues then put the exclamation point on the Sachems’ stellar week when he was sent in on a break by Oxley to ice the game.
