They might have been the No. 8 seed in the Division 2 North sectional but Wilmington was by no means an easy out for No. 1 seed Lynnfield in the quarterfinals on Friday at Stoneham Arena.The Wildcats got a first period goal from Brian Pickett and the game winner from Cam Owens in the first minute of the third as they stunned the top seeded Pioneers, 2-1, in front of over 1,000 fans.”Wilmington is a very good team,” Lynnfield coach Vin Mirasolo said. “My team gave me maximum effort but we just didn’t get the bounces (Friday).”The Pioneers (18-4-1) actually outshot Wilmington 30-19 in the game but couldn’t get anything past goaltender Luke Foley until Alex Ganter scored on a rebound with four minutes left in regulation.Lynnfield nearly tied the game three times over those final four minutes, but Foley was able to make the stops and the Pioneers were eliminated.”I thought we had a little momentum when we made it 2-1 and we had some chances,” Mirasolo said. “But we didn’t have the luck.”Pioneer goalie Joe Bassi played brilliantly as well, stopping three breakaways as a part of his 17 stop effort.Winthrop 1, Boston Latin 0At Woburn’s O’Brien Rink, sophomore Dan Eruzione scored the lone goal at 2:32 of the first period a the Vikings moved to the Division 2 North semifinal, to be played Tuesday in Chelmsford at a time to be announced.Senior captain Chris LeBlanc had the assist.In other action, North Andover eliminated Danvers, 1-0.
